Zombie Caddy

Earlier this month I was lucky enough to attend a figure drawing marathon that featured guest lecturer Stephen Silver. I felt like I have learned so much about character designing from the amazing Stephen Silver that I needed to put this new knowledge to good use. So I did a quick thing before the new semester really starts to kick in. So I introduce to you, Barney. He is a zombie caddy who once dreamed of being a professional golf caddy before he died when he accidentally swallowed a golf ball.

I tried just experimenting with different shapes and pushing them as far as could.

Some different silhouettes for his body shape.

And some more.

Hey look! It's Barney!

Color Practice

TandT: 020

Here is a color practice that slowly made its way towards a sci-fi direction or style. May I say that the sci-fi genre is something that I don't have much practice in but for the sake of it being summer break I thought "why not!"

Ani 115 Pre Production Work

TandT: 019

Here is my Pre-Production work for my short animation I am working on for my animation class. It has been a long semester so far, but it has been a lot of fun as well. Cant wait until this project is done!

So my characters name is Oskar.

Here is a turnaround of Oskar.

Some character and color ideations of Oskar.

And before the look of Oscar was finalized, it took many drawings to find his look. (I have more but i dont think you guys want to see them lol)

Including Oskar, there are 5 more characters in the short film. There names are Sam, Karl, Danny, Eric, and Neal.

These small characters are monsters that ignore Oskar at first due to him being so different than them. Although throughout the progression of the film become close to Oskar.

Some more turnarounds of the small monsters.

Again, this was before the final look of the small monsters were finalized. I tried exploring different looks and shapes although still trying to preserve this sense of roundness for the characters.

Some more drawings of potential small monsters before the small character looks were finalized.

And a little tease on how my backgrounds for the film are going to look like.
I got 8 more, but aint going to show them until the film is finished lol.

TandT: 018

Its been a long semester so far. But being on break has given me a chance to work on a spontaneous personal project. So what I have here is a project I came up with on the fly. Living on the coast I see the endless forest of Eucalyptus trees all lining along the coastside hills. It seems like such a peaceful and mysterious place. I found myself thinking that it would be a great place to build a home. Living in the quiet eucalyptus forest away from the hustle and bustle of the everyday life. A small oasis. So my idea for the project follows my daydream. We have Francis, a retired veteran and school teacher, who decides to leave his busy and tiresome life in the city and moves to the country. Francis is accompanied by his faithful golden retriever, Drake. Francis and Drake decide to live in a small cabin on the edge of a silent eucalyptus grove. They spend their days exploring the Eucalyptus grove. For both Francis and Drake the eucalyptus grove is like there second home. They both find themselves exploring, finding new things with the grove, and getting lost by the beauty and mystery of the grove. Although one day they discover that the grove embodies something that have never seen before; a mysterious power. They soon discover that the grove is alive with an entity all of itself.

So basically I feel like this was great practice of having a small idea and really trying to produce some vis dev on a small amount of time. I gave myself a timeline of 4 days to produce this. Also, I was really inspired by the work done in shows like Gravity Falls and Steven Universe. The vis dev for those shows are straight up gorgeous and really I am just trying to get good those amazing artist. Although this was fun to do, I do have to get back to my schoolwork.

Some cabin ideations for Francis and Drake.

Think I got a little to crazy with the color of the eucalyptus bark lol.

Deep within the grove, they discover the power of the forest.

TandT: 016 Daily #13

Darn summer is now over but school is here!!! Yeah I know I haven't been posting things up lately. But it was due to the fact that I was working on a summer sketchbook that I needed to have completed before the semester started. Now the semester has started, I am officially in the program now (wooo!!!), summer has come and gone;  now it is back to the old grind of school. This semester I am taking two animation classes so what I have decided to do now (hopefully with a little luck and hard work I shall continue with it) is that I am going to try to complete a sketchbook every month. Now it does seem ambitious but I know it is possible if I can really commit myself! The reason why I want to do this is not only because I like to draw but I feel like my drawings need to reach that next level. As of lately I feel like my peers drawing abilities have really improved so it gets me even more motivated to get better. Nothing wrong with a little healthy competition lol Also, I am going to try to continue with my daily paintings. The situation now with school starting, I might need to improve on trying to paint faster because I wont have the luxury of time as much as the summer but I hope to keep my hands fresh until I take a digital painting class next semester. Lets have a good semester!!!

So here a quick Edgar Payne study:

And a page of my new monthly sketch book project:

TandT: 015 Daily #12

So another portrait. Was working on trying to improve on painting soft edges. Still needs work but I am done with it, sometimes you just gotta stop.

TandT: 014 Daily #11

Yeah got a little behind due the fact that I just needed a break from stuff. Been trying to concentrate more on my summer sketchbook. So today I decided to paint boxing gloves because this summer I have been inspired to get back into shape after watching shows like the Ultimate Fighter and other fighting shows. Watching these fighters train just makes me wanna go workout and fight!!! lol jk

TandT: 013 Daily #10

So tomorrow is my sister Karina's birthday party and she is 11 now. So I decided to make her a small gift, a birthday card to say the least. My sister Karina is one smart and strong little girl that doesn't let anything get in her way. She is very determined and goal oriented. Which makes her an awesome sister. She also like drawing and painting like me, so I thought it would be a cool gift to draw her as an animated character more or less. It is the first time I have done such a thing as drawing someone I know as a character. It was fun and challenging. *Crosses finger I hope she likes it!!!

TandT: 012 Daily #9

TandT: 011 Daily #8

Today I was inspired by the video game "Journey." It is such a beautiful game, although I have never played the game, the visuals are amazing. I just love the colors they used. So today my daily was inspired more or less by the color choices from the game.

TandT: 010 Daily #7

So today I went figure painting for the first time with some awesome friends. Man was it challenging but nevertheless fun. What was difficult for me was trying to get the right color for the skin tone, although it might have been due the fact that I didn't try to establish the local color until later instead of the beginning. Although my results are not really what I wanted, I definitely learned a lot. Gonna definitely gonna go again sometime soon.

Time: 3 hrs (with breaks)

So today's idea or theme for my digital painting was ice cream because I had some ice cream today and well it was good lol Also everyday is always a good day for ice cream. Also, this is another color practice inspired by Dice Tsutsumi.

TandT: 009 Daily #6

Here is a color study. I wanted to practice lighting and bounce lights reflecting off different objects. Also, I feel like I need to paint a little more saturated. I am really inspired by color artist such as Dice Tsutsumi, Nathan Fowkes, and Goro Fujita. This was a practice to get better at color.

TandT: 008 Daily #5

This is fun! Although I am still struggling, this whole experimentation of a new medium is fun. Also need to be a more little confident with my paint strokes. I am in a way trying to tackle this as if I was actually painting with oil paints. I also like whole lock of the traditional look in Photoshop. Gotta keep going!

TandT: 007 Daily #4

Yeah I am off by a few days with my daily speed paintings but have been busy with so many things. Now though, I am going to try to catch up and keep it going! So today I bought this awesome magazine called "Digital Painting", its a ImagineFX magazine, and it has open my freaking mind about digital painting. I thing reading the little bit I have has lead me to learn so much. i think painting in Photoshop makes a little more sense now. So here is another attempt at a colored portrait. This time around I think things started to make more sense. I do have a lot to learn but I felt like it could be the start of an "ah ha" moment. Gotta keep it going!!!

TandT: 006 Daily #3

Sorry was a little late posting this up last night but I was so tired from last night to post my daily for 07/18/13. Nonetheless its been none and not behind yet lol So this is my first colored portrait on Photoshop. Man this was a challenge. It was a challenge trying to transfer some things I learned from painting traditionally on to the digital media. I was fun none the less and definitely learned a lot. Going to do more along the way!

TandT: 005 Daily #2

Another painting today. This was definitely a bigger challenge for me today. The color were not harmonies as I wanted them to be. Also found myself changing some of the composition in the middle of painting the piece, I guess I need to do even more thumbnails before I paint. All and all, I know as a beginner all my initial paintings are not gonna meet my expectations but that is not stopping me from trying to get better everyday. Baby steps yo!

TandT: 004 Daily #1

Woooo! Its been a while since I posted something lol. Man the summer has been filled with so many things. Currently I am working on a program sketchbook which by the end of the summer I have needed to completed at least 80 pages. Also, due to the fact that I am not gonna have a digital painting class until next year, I am going to start doing daily digital paintings. (Lets see how long this last lol) But I am determined to make something of this! Although currently my digital painting skills aren't that good, this going to be a great way to keep on motivating myself to get better!!!

So here we go digital painting #1! My inspiration for this painting was Edgar Payne. He is an amazing artist with such an incredible eye for color. Just looking at his stuff makes me motivated to paint like him. So with this one I started off with 30 quick thumbnails, then from there I derived the final piece. Let me know what you guys think.

Yo TandT out!

TandT:003

So as the due date for the portfolio review is drawing near and nearer, I am posting up my third pass for my portfolio. On this pass of my portfolio I was concentrating on arranging everything cleanly and trying to compose my pieces better. From the help of many friends (too many to name but thanks you guys!!!) I have gotten this far with my portfolio. Just hope I am closer to finishing it. SO feel free to let me know what you guys think!!!
Also, I was working on a maquette for a hero tree design I have been working on for the last couple of weeks. The design is actually in my portfolio, see page 4! It is by no means close to professional level but honestly I a lot of fun sculpting out my design. I also learned a lot about what I need to pay attention to when I design more things in the future. I really need to carefully think and design pieces with the mindset of it being 3-D instead of it being flat on paper. Don't know if this makes sense but yeah XD, though this is important  because i want to go into the Visual Development field of animation, most things that are developed and designed by Vis Dev artist eventually need to be modeled in 3-D either sculpting it out with modeling clay, like I tried doing lol, or in Maya. So now I learned that reference is key and really think about form when designing something.
So enough of me rambling and such.
Yo TandT out!!
